Joey Barton claims that Liverpool "would be mad" not to back Luis Suarez after the striker appeared to bite Branislav Ivanovic this afternoon.

Joey Barton has claimed that Liverpool should back Luis Suarez after the striker appeared to bite Branislav Ivanovic this afternoon.

The incident took place during Liverpool's 2-2 draw with Chelsea and has been widely condemned, with some suggesting that Liverpool should sell the striker.

Barton, though, insists that the Uruguayan is a good player and that the club should keep him.

"Suarez is a good as a player as there is in world football at the minute," Barton posted on Twitter.

"Yes, he's messed up and shouldn't have bitten another player but a player like him as to play right on the edge. Without it he wouldn't be the talent he is.

"LFC would be mad not to back him IMO (in my opinion), if they don't I'm sure the queue of Champions League clubs would stretch round the block."

Barton is currently on loan at Marseille and has claimed that he will not return to Queens Park Rangers.
