Fabinho: 'Liverpool not worried about the past in quest for title'

Fabinho hopes that Liverpool have the right mentality to see through their Premier League title challenge and end a wait of nearly three decades.

Liverpool midfielder Fabinho has insisted that the past counts for little as his side go in search of a first ever Premier League title.

The Reds have returned to form with four wins on the spin in the league to take hold of top spot, albeit having played a game more than Manchester City.

This weekend's visit of Chelsea will present Liverpool with their toughest remaining title test - a fixture that is best remembered on the red half of Merseyside for all the wrong reasons.

It was almost five years ago to the day that a Steven Gerrard slip proved costly as Chelsea went on to record a 2-0 win at Anfield, leaving Liverpool's dreams of a first top-flight success since 1990 in tatters.

Only a select few remain in the squad from that afternoon, however, and Fabinho is hopeful that he and his teammates can put things right this time around.

"Other people from other clubs might speak about it in a way to rile us but I am not focused on it," he told The Telegraph. "We are in a similar situation now in that we have a chance to win the league.

"Obviously it's unfortunate that Liverpool lost that game but it's not something that's worrying us; it happened in the past. Today is today and we have different players who want to write another story. This is another chapter. We are Liverpool and we are going to give it our all.

"Twenty-nine years is a long time for a club like Liverpool [to win the title]. Obviously I am in my first season here but it would be great to win the league, to achieve something historic. Playing for Liverpool I know what the relationship between the fans and the club is like. With every player you can see the desire to win, the desire to show that Liverpool are the best and deserve to win the league.

"Right now this is the time of the season when everything is being decided. It's been a great season and it would be a shame if we didn't end it with a title after all the effort we have put in. We have five games left in the league and hopefully four in the Champions League. The team is in a good spot."

Fabinho, a £43.7m signing from Monaco last summer, has started 18 of Liverpool's Premier League matches and featured from the bench a further six times.
