David Wagner: Facing Jurgen Klopp will be "extraordinary"

Wagner: Facing Klopp will be

David Wagner is relishing his battle with Jurgen Klopp this weekend, as the Huddersfield Town boss comes up against his close friend and compatriot at Anfield.

Huddersfield Town boss David Wagner has confessed that he never expected to go head-to-head with Jurgen Klopp on the touchline, as he prepares his side for their trip to take on Liverpool.

The Terriers travel to Anfield seeking another fairytale moment, a week on from beating Manchester United at the John Smith's Stadium in their biggest scalp yet since earning promotion to the big time.

This weekend's clash will have particular importance for Wagner, who was best man at Liverpool boss Klopp's wedding and still has a close bond with his compatriot following their time together at Borussia Dortmund.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the match, he said: "Even when I joined Huddersfield and he was already the manager of Liverpool, I never thought we would meet ever in the Premier League. It was never in my head. It is, for sure, something extraordinary. It's a great relationship.

"It's more than friendship. Maybe he's more a family member than a friend. That is the truth. He is the manager of Liverpool, I am the manager of Huddersfield Town and now we play Premier League. Great story. For sure I am looking forward to it because he's the manager, but I would be looking forward to the game... I looked forward when I met Jose Mourinho.

"It is extraordinary, yes it is, because he's my best friend and he's the manager of Liverpool, but I think the really important thing and extraordinary story is if Huddersfield Town beat Liverpool in the Premier League in a competitive game. I don't know how many years since this football club was able to play at Anfield in a competitive game - this is the real big story for us."

Huddersfield and Liverpool have not met in a competitive match since 1999, when Liverpool earned a 2-0 victory in the FA Cup.
