South Yorkshire Police are considering referring themselves to the Independent Police Complaints Commission following revelations over the Hillsborough disaster.

Documents released on Wednesday by the Hillsborough Independent Panel revealed that police and ambulance services were to blame for the tragedy in 1989 that killed 96 Liverpool supporters during an FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest.

Officers from the force were found to have doctored statements in an attempt to shift blame onto fans.

"South Yorkshire Police is currently reviewing a wide variety of matters raised in the report of the Hillsborough Independent Panel with a view to making a referral to the Independent Police Complaints Commission," read a statement.

South Yorkshire Police have said that 195 officers who were working on the day of the tragedy are still employed by the force.
