Nathaniel Clyne: 'Jurgen Klopp calls me a machine'

Nathaniel Clyne reveals that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has given him the nickname "machine".

Liverpool defender Nathaniel Clyne has revealed that manager Jurgen Klopp has nicknamed him "a machine".

The 25-year-old has been an ever-present for the Reds so far this season, contributing one assist as they begin their title challenge in earnest.

"The manager has called me a machine in the past," Clyne told Match of the Day magazine. "I'm not entirely sure why, it's probably because I play in loads of games and rarely get injured or come off with knocks. All I try and do is my best for the team and try not to complain about anything."

Liverpool currently sit fourth in the Premier League, just two points off the top, and while Clyne had praise for his side's strong start, he expressed disappointment at their defensive record.

"It's a long way to go but we've done really well," he added. "We're just going to focus on the next game.

"We haven't had a clean sheet yet so as a defender, I'm a bit disappointed. I want to get clean sheets, but we need to work harder in training on our defending.

"I'd definitely say I'm fitter. Pre-season the manager worked us really hard and also in regular training he works us really hard to be fit enough to meet his demands when we're playing!"

Liverpool welcome arch rivals Manchester United to Anfield on October 17 when Premier League action resumes after the international break.
