Mohamed Salah breaks Premier League record in Everton draw as Liverpool suffer double suspension blow

Liverpool wing wizard Mohamed Salah both broke a Premier League record and extended one of his existing ones in the Reds' pulsating 2-2 Merseyside derby draw with Everton at Goodison Park.

The final contest between the Toffees and Liverpool to be played at Everton's famous home did not disappoint, as David Moyes's men left it extremely late to salvage a share of the spoils.

Either side of Beto's opener and James Tarkowski's astonishing last-gasp leveller, Salah earned a slice of Premier League history by laying on a delicate assist for Alexis Mac Allister's equalising header.

The 32-year-old's assist was his 22nd direct goal contribution away from home in the 2024-25 Premier League season, overtaking Andy Cole's previous record of 21 from the 1993-94 campaign.

Salah then moved onto 23 in the charts with a ruthless finish in the second half, which also saw him extend one of his existing top-flight records for scoring and assisting in the same game.

The former Chelsea man has now scored and set up a goal in nine different top-flight matches this season; his previous total of eight was already an all-time best for a single Premier League season.

However, just when Liverpool and Salah were about to celebrate going nine points clear at the top of the Premier League table, Tarkowski's extraordinary volley rescued the most incredible of points for the hosts.

Goodison Park descended into bedlam both on and off the field following the centre-back's drive, as Curtis Jones took particular issue with Abdoulaye Doucoure celebrating in front of the away supporters.

Jones and Doucoure engaged in a momentary fracas before players and security staff intervened, and both were dismissed by Michael Oliver after the full-time whistle, with Jones already on a booking.

The Liverpool boss was given his own a red card by Oliver at the end, seemingly for something he said to the referee, while Everton's Doucoure was also sent off for his involvement in the chaotic scenes.

Despite the devastating nature of Wednesday's draw, Liverpool now have a healthy seven-point lead over Arsenal, who have just been hit with the crushing news that Kai Havertz will miss the rest of the season with a hamstring injury.
