Jurgen Klopp reveals that his exchange of words with Xherdan Shaqiri following Liverpool's 2-1 loss to Chelsea was down to a late free kick which went wrong.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has questioned the decision-making of Xherdan Shaqiri as his side chased a late goal against Chelsea in the EFL Cup.

The frustrated German was seen exchanging words with his summer signing on the pitch at full time following his side's 2-1 loss at Anfield on Wednesday night.

Klopp has confirmed that his disagreement with Shaqiri was down to a free kick awarded in added time, which the 26-year-old - hauled off at half time in the 3-0 win over Southampton last weekend - failed to make the most of.

"I spoke about a free-kick - the last one," Klopp told reporters after the match. "Mo [Salah] was standing wide and a whole bunch of players were in one the direction where we shot the ball.

"If he could have played in Mo on a one-on-one situation in the last minute of the game it would have been not too bad.

"It was only about the free kick, nothing else. But at 1-0, Shaq was completely alone in the box and maybe you will have to ask him why he didn't shoot in that situation."

Shaqiri has made five appearances for Liverpool since his £12m switch from Stoke City in the summer, three of which have come from the bench.
