How Liverpool could line up against Manchester City

Sports Mole looks at how Liverpool could line up for their huge European showdown with Manchester City at Anfield.

Liverpool lock horns with Manchester City in the last eight of the Champions League on Wednesday night, aiming to take a first-leg advantage into next week's reverse fixture.

The Reds have netted 75 times in the Premier League this season - a tally only bettered by Man City - and have also looked more assured at the back in recent weeks.

Home boss Jurgen Klopp still has some key decisions to make in central midfield, though, and his plans may have changed with news that centre-back Joel Matip is expected to miss the rest of the season through injury.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how Liverpool could line up for the huge European showdown.

Possible Liverpool XI vs. Man City

Out: Joe Gomez (ankle), Adam Lallana (hamstring), Joel Matip (thigh)
Doubtful: Emre Can (back), Nathaniel Clyne (back)

Klopp will be without Lallana for the first leg after the midfielder pulled up with a hamstring strain just five minutes into his first Liverpool outing in close to a month, while Can has also spent the past fortnight recovering from a back problem.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain may therefore be given a chance to impress in a midfield three, with Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Georginio Wijnaldum battling it out for the other two spots.

Matip's likely absence for the rest of 2017-18 means that Dejan Lovren, a second-half sub against Crystal Palace last time out, will almost certainly partner Virgil van Dijk in the heart of defence.

There is little doubt over who Klopp will go with up top, though, with Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino combining for 19 Champions League goals this term.
