Preview: Leicester City vs. Sevilla - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Sunday's pre-season friendly between Leicester City and Sevilla, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Leicester City will round off their preparations for the 2022-23 campaign with a friendly against Spanish giants Sevilla on Sunday evening.

The Foxes will begin their new Premier League season against Brentford on August 7, while Sevilla will start their 2022-23 La Liga campaign away to Osasuna on August 12.

Leicester finished eighth in the Premier League last season, which has to go down as a disappointment considering that they were fifth in both 2019-20 and 2020-21.

Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers would have been desperate to improve his squad this summer, but the club are yet to make a single first-team signing, while there has only been one permanent departure in the shape of Edin Jakupovic, so it is an almost identical squad to last season at this stage.

Leicester have played five friendlies this summer, opening their preparations for the new campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Notts County on July 9 before drawing 3-3 with OH Leuven one week later.

Rodgers's side have won their last three pre-season games, overcoming Hull City, Derby County and Preston North End, and they will now conclude their preparations for the 2022-23 season against Sevilla, with their first match of the new Premier League campaign coming against Brentford on August 7.

A difficult opening month of the season will also see Leicester face Arsenal, Southampton and Chelsea, before September opens with a home fixture against Manchester United.

Sevilla, meanwhile, have played three friendlies this summer, drawing 1-1 with Tottenham Hotspur on July 16 before repeating the same scoreline against Sporting Lisbon eight days later, winning the resulting penalty shootout against the Portuguese club.

Julen Lopetegui's side thumped Angers 6-0 in their last game on Wednesday, and they will be in action again before this match, taking on Arsenal in the Emirates Cup on Saturday afternoon.

Sevilla will then face Leicester and Cadiz in their final two pre-season games of the summer before opening their 2022-23 La Liga campaign away to Osasuna on August 12.

Los Nervionenses finished fourth in La Liga last season, meaning that there will be Champions League football at Estadio Ramon this term, but they have been quiet in the transfer market, only bringing in Brazilian centre-back Marcao from Galatasaray.

There have been two major defensive exits this summer, though, with Jules Kounde and Diego Carlos both departing, so there will be at least one more centre-back arriving before the end of the window.

Team News

Leicester City's Kasper Schmeichel reacts, November 25, 2021© Reuters

Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel is currently being strongly linked with an exit, so it is unclear whether the Denmark international will be involved for the Foxes here.

Head coach Rodgers could select the XI that might start the league opener with Brentford, with Jamie Vardy, Jonny Evans and James Maddison among those expected to be in the side.

Harvey Barnes, Youri Tielemans and Wesley Fofana have also all been linked with moves away from the King Power Stadium in recent days, but the trio are likely to be involved in this encounter.

As for Sevilla, the fact that the Spanish outfit are in action against Arsenal on Saturday makes it difficult to predict a starting side for this contest.

There are expected to be a number of familiar faces in the away team's XI, though, with Jesus Navas, Ivan Rakitic and Thomas Delaney all in line to feature.

Rafa Mir, Lucas Ocampos and Jesus Manuel Corona could play as the front three, while there is likely to be a spot in the middle of the defence for new signing Marcao.

Leicester City possible starting lineup:
Stolarczyk; Justin, Evans, Soyuncu, Thomas; Dewsbury-Hall, Ndidi, Maddison; Barnes, Vardy, Daka

Sevilla possible starting lineup:
Bounou; Navas, Marcao, Rekik, Acuna; Delaney, Jordan, Rakitic; Ocampos, Mir, Corona

We say: Leicester City 1-1 Sevilla

Leicester will be keen to conclude their pre-season with a strong performance and a positive result, and the fact that Sevilla are in action against Arsenal on Saturday should work in the home side's favour. However, we are backing a low-scoring draw in this contest due to Sevilla's quality.
