GDS set for first use in domestic cup football

Goal Decision System technology will be used for the first time in domestic cup football during the Capital One Cup this week.

The Football League confirmed today that at grounds where the technology is installed, it will be used from this week's fifth-round fixtures and onwards to the final at Wembley.

Andy Williamson, the Football League's chief operating officer, said: "In many ways, its use in cup football is even more important than in league football, as any decision about whether the ball has crossed the goalline can mean the difference between a club being knocked out or not – and could even determine the eventual Wembley winners."

The GDS system, which tells referees whether the ball has crossed the goalline or not, was introduced this season and has been used at all Premier League matches.
