Chievo claim easy win over Lazio

Chievo secure an emphatic 4-0 win over Lazio to move to the top of the Serie A table.

AC Chievo Verona have moved to the top of the Serie A table after wrapping up a convincing 4-0 win over Lazio at the Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi.

Lazio looked the more likely of the two sides early on, with Balde Keita and Antonio Candreva both finding themselves in space in the box, but they were unable to beat Albano Bizzarri.

Despite the visitors' bright start, it was Chievo who opened the scoring when Riccardo Meggiorini found himself in space on the edge of the box following a long ball forward from Valter Birsa, breaking the deadlock with a low finish.

Alberto Paloschi could have doubled the lead 10 minutes later when he hit the ball first time from the edge of the box, but Etrit Berisha made a diving stop at full stretch to keep it out.

Paloschi did find the back of the net on the half-hour mark, though, when Meggiorini crossed the ball in from out wide, leaving his strike partner with a simple finish.

Things got worse for Lazio just before the interval as they gave away a free kick in a promising position, which Birsa took advantage of, curling the ball around the wall and into the top-right corner to extend the home side's lead further.

Lazio almost gave themselves some hope early in the second half when Marco Parolo tried to head in from a Stefan de Vrij cross, but Bizzarri got to the ball at full stretch to stop it sneaking inside the near post.

Chievo soon rediscovered their first-half dominance though, making it four with more than 20 minutes still to play when Paloschi sliced the ball into the roof of the net from a lofted Birsa pass, despite the assistant referee initially wanting to rule it out for offside.

Ricardo Kishna had a chance to secure a late consolation for the visitors inside the final 10 minutes, but he could not head the ball in from Ravel Morrison's corner.

Chievo are one of five teams to still have a 100% record in Serie A, but they have the best goal difference to sit at the top of the standings, while Lazio drop to 12th.
