Italy manager Antonio Conte calls off mid-season training camp due to absences

Italy football manager Antonio Conte is forced to call off a planned national training camp after several clubs refused to release players.

Italy manager Antonio Conte has called off a mid-season training camp scheduled for the start of next week.

Several clubs were not comfortable with releasing their players at such a crucial time in the Serie A season, just a week before the Champions League and Europa League resume, according to Forza Italian Football.

Conte said that he was happy to go along with the club's wishes but warned that they would have to work more closely with the national setup in future.

"I hope that from now on we will be able to find solutions together to make the national team a point of reference for our football system," he said.

The move echoes that of England manager Roy Hodgson last year, after he also had to cancel a planned meeting with players due to club objections.

Conte has made a good start as Italy manager, winning five of his first six games.
