Sean St Ledger has departed Ipswich Town without having made an appearance for the Championship club.
The 30-year-old agreed a short-term deal at Portman Road in late November following a trial period.
However, having assessed his playing squad in recent weeks, manager Mick McCarthy has decided that he can get by without the Irish defender.
"Sean's gone back. I have got young Matt Clarke who is excellent and I would not stand in his way by having someone who I don't think is going to do any better than him. I would play Matt," he told the East Anglian Daily Times.
"I also have Elliott Hewitt out at Colchester with a 24-hour recall so I am not going to put a block on their progression by taking someone in."
St Ledger had been without a club since the summer when his contract with Leicester City expired.
