Wigan Athletic edge past Ipswich Town

Wigan Athletic beat Ipswich Town 3-1 in their Championship meeting at Portman Road.

Wigan Athletic have moved into the Championship playoff places with a 3-1 win over Ipswich Town at Portman Road.

The home side came close early on when Daryl Murphy was picked out by Paul Anderson in the box, but his close-range effort was turned around the post by Ali Al-Habsi.

In the 19th minute Ipswich took the lead through Tommy Smith, who fired home after Wigan had failed to clear Aaron Cresswell's free kick.

Their lead didn't last long and within three minutes the visitors levelled. Marc-Antoine Fortune pulled the ball back for James McClean to drill a strike past Dean Gerken.

With three minutes of the first half left to play, Wigan went ahead, as Leon Barnett met Jordi Gomez's free kick to head an effort into the back of the net.

After the break Barnett came close to scoring his second of the afternoon when he was picked out by another Gomez set piece, but this time he headed wide.

Wigan made the three points safe with a third goal 13 minutes from time, as McClean met Fortune's cross to tap home at the back post.
