Hull disappointed by failed Long swoop

Hull City managing director Nick Thompson has admitted that the club is disappointed by missing out on a move for West Bromwich Albion striker Shane Long.

The Tigers came close to landing the Republic of Ireland international for £5m on deadline day before the deal fell through.

"It's enormously disappointing, of course, but West Brom had always made it clear it would be conditional on them doing their own business," Thompson told the Hull Daily Mail. "They came to the stage late in the day that they no longer wanted to do the deal."

Long joined West Brom from Reading in summer 2011.
