Steve Bruce tells Hull City: 'Use Wigan Athletic as motivation'

Steve Bruce tells Hull to use Blackpool and Wigan's plight into League One as motivation to stay in the Premier League this season.

Steve Bruce has told his Hull City players to draw motivation from Wigan Athletic and Blackpool's relegation into League One as the Tigers bid to stay in the Premier League.

Both clubs, who were in the top flight as recently as 2010, were relegated from the Championship this season, with the Tangerines knowing their fate for a number of weeks.

The decline has arguably been steeper for the Latics, who defeated Manchester City to clinch the FA Cup in 2013, and Bruce has called on his charges to treat the plight as cautionary tales.

Hull sit two places and one point above the drop zone in 16th as they prepare to face Arsenal at the KC Stadium on Monday night.

"When you look at League One there are plenty of clubs who have been in the Premier League – Swindon, Barnsley, Oldham," he told The Express.

"That shows you how difficult it is. I've got great affinity for Wigan and it disappoints me that they've slipped out of it. They were in the FA Cup final two years ago.

"It's a warning about what can happen. We are Hull, let's not forget that."

City have won their last two games, having previously gone six matches without a win.
