Match Analysis: Hull City 2-2 West Ham United

West Ham United twice came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw against Hull City in their Premier League match.

Abel Hernandez headed the hosts into the lead, before a long-range strike from Enner Valencia levelled the scores.

Mohamed Diame restored Hull's advantage just past the hour mark, but an own-goal from Curtis Davies soon after secured a point for the visitors.

Was the result fair?

In the end, a draw was a fair result for the effort that both teams put into the match. There was no telling that this fixture would result in four goals, after a first half that lacked quality in the final third. Hull were probably the better team in the first half and Hernandez's header brought the game to life. However, the Hammers hit back after half time and they showed great spirit to come from behind twice.

Hull City's performance

The Tigers started the game well and dominated the possession early on, but they struggled to really test Adrian in the first half. That all changed when Hernandez scored and the striker hit the bar soon after in what was an impressive debut. They could not have done much about Valencia's stunning goal, but Bruce will have been unhappy at the way in which his team defended West Ham's second of the evening. A plus point will be the performance of their new signings, who both found the net, and the form of goalkeeper Allan McGregor, who made some vital saves.

West Ham's performance

It is no secret that West Ham were among the lowest scorers in the league last season, but they were much more positive going forward this evening. Valencia and Diafra Sakho in particular caused the Hull defence problems all evening with their strength and pace. However, Sam Allardyce will not be pleased at the manner in which his team defended. The Hammers may feel that they could have taken all three points given the number of shots they had this evening, and they almost won the game in stoppage time when Valencia's late strike was deflected onto the bar.

Mohamed Diame: The Senegal international joined Hull from West Ham on deadline day and he showed his class against his former club. He was strong in the challenge throughout and dominated the midfield. Diame crowned his debut with a fine finish and supporters of the club will be encouraged by his start to life in a Hull shirt.

Biggest gaffe

It would be slightly harsh to criticise Davies for his own goal, as there was not too much the defender could have done to prevent the ball going in. He was unable to react quickly enough as Sakho's shot deflected off him to gift West Ham a second equaliser, but in the end it meant that his team had to settle for a point.

Referee's performance

Martin Atkinson did not have a difficult evening and did not have to make any controversial calls. He allowed the game to flow and handed out four yellow cards, for challenges that all deserved to be penalised.

What next?

Hull City: The Tigers face a trip to Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday, before playing West Bromwich Albion in the third round of the League Cup four days later.

West Ham: West Ham host Liverpool next Saturday evening in the Premier League, with an away clash against Manchester United to come the following weekend.
