Rangers beat Hibernian in eight-goal thriller

Rangers come back from going a goal down to beat Hibernian 6-2 at Easter Road.

Rangers recovered from going a goal down early on to beat Hibernian 6-2 in a blistering Scottish Challenge Cup first-round clash at Easter Road this afternoon.

Hibs started the game as the stronger side, and should have been ahead when Paul Hanlon's pass found Dominique Malonga unmarked in the Rangers box, but the Congolese striker blazed his effort over the bar.

Sam Stanton was more accurate with his 20-yard strike on 14 minutes that beat the dive of Wes Foderingham to put Hibs ahead.

However, the home side's lead was short lived as James Tavernier levelled the game with a free kick from the edge of the area six minutes before the break.

Things got even better for Rangers when Martyn Waghorn swept home Jason Holt's cross from close range with virtually the last kick of the half.

The visitors then started the second half the way they ended the first as Waghorn fired home from a tight angle to put them further ahead.

Hibs temporarily stopped the rot when Jason Cummings reduced the deficit from the penalty spot following Danny Wilson's foul in the box on the hour mark, but the respite was brief as Andy Halliday lashed home from 25 yards just two minutes later.

Kenny Miller then tapped home Nicky Clark's cross to make it five, before the veteran striker completed a miserable afternoon for Alan Stubbs's side when he applied the finish to Barrie McKay's inviting ball late on.
