Groningen snatch KNVB Beker from PEC Zwolle

Groningen win maiden KNVB Beker

Former Manchester City youngster Albert Rusnak scored a second-half brace as Groningen claimed victory in the KNVB Beker final to land the trophy for the first time in their history.

It was expected to be a closely-matched final at the De Kuip Stadion, with the pair seventh and eighth in the Eredivisie table, but Groningen had the better of the opportunities throughout.

After a goalless opening period - the first time in nine years that there hadn't been a first-half goal in the cup final - Groningen scored twice in 11 minutes through Rusnak to open up a comfortable lead.

Zwolle were going for back-to-back victories in the cup after winning it for the first time last year, but they were unable to break down a Groningen defence that have now conceded just three goals in their last nine KNVB Beker games.
