Joachim Low 'quietly confident of 2014 success'

Germany manager Joachim Low hints that he is 'quietly confident' of their World Cup chances after witnessing his experimental side record a "deserved" 1-0 win over England.

Germany coach Joachim Low has hinted that he is optimistic about their World Cup chances after witnessing his second string 'deservedly' beat England on Tuesday.

The three-time winners of the tournament rested star names such as Mesut Ozil, Manuel Neuer and Philipp Lahm as they comfortably recorded their sixth straight win at Wembley.

Low has admitted that the impressive performances of those fringe players auditioning for spots in his squad for Brazil gives him confidence heading into next year, and suggested that his only frustration was not winning by a bigger margin against a Three Lions side that failed to register a shot on target.

"The fact that we won here at this time-honoured place is a source of joy for us," Low told reporters. "Over the 90 minutes we deserved to win this game. We had a good grip on the game. What we missed was converting a few chances on the break, especially in the second half, to seal the game earlier than we did.

"I was annoyed at times because we really squandered our chances, many of them when we should have extended our lead much earlier. Especially when England were open in defence, we should have scored that second goal.

"I can approach 2014 with a sense of quiet confidence. Many of the players who I wanted to test here today can be proud to have withstood the pressure of playing against such a great crowd."

Bastian Schweinsteiger, Sami Khedira, Lukas Podolski, Thomas Muller and the country's all-time leading goalscorer Miroslav Klose were among the other experienced stars who did not feature in London.
