Genoa appoint Gigi De Canio

Genoa have appointed Gigi De Canio as the club's new coach with immediate effect.

The Genoa board made the decision just hours after opting to part company with Alberto Malesani.

The managerial movement has ended a turbulent weekend for the Italian club, who saw their Serie A fixture against Siena yesterday afternoon halted for 40 minutes following a protest by their supporters.

A number of fans demanded that the players took off their match shirts, believing that they were not worthy of wearing them.

Malesani had only taken charge of Genoa on April 2.
