France boss Didier Deschamps defends Olivier Giroud display

France boss Didier Deschamps sympathises with Olivier Giroud after the striker was booed off the pitch during the friendly win over Serbia.

France manager Didier Deschamps has stated that he feels sympathy for Olivier Giroud after he was booed off the pitch during the friendly win over Serbia.

The Arsenal striker spurned a number of chances in Monday night's 2-1 victory, before being subjected to jeers from the crowd when he was replaced by Karim Benzema in the second half.

Deschamps has said that Giroud put in a committed display, even if he could not find the back of the net.

"It's a collective effort and he contributed too," Deschamps told ESPN. "He was unlucky as well because the keeper made a superb save. He had three chances with one shot off target and a header that went wide.

"Obviously if he was more efficient we would have been a lot further ahead but he put in a lot of effort. Olivier knows it - he's the first to be sad about not being able to be effective but it happens.

"When it's not Olivier, sometimes it could be Karim. But the collective effort was of very high quality."

Giroud has scored 10 goals in 39 appearances for France.
