Exeter City strip Danny Coles of the club captaincy and place him on the transfer list after his expletive-ridden Twitter activity last month.

League Two club Exeter City have stripped Danny Coles of his captaincy and put the defender on the transfer list because of expletive-ridden Twitter posts last month.

Coles replied "f*** off c***" to a 14-year-old boy who had responded to his tweet about Phil Jagielka during an England game and likened the Exeter man to the Everton centre-back.

Coles then tweeted a number of other Exeter fans in a similarly angry fashion.

He has since apologised and deleted his Twitter account, but the club have still decided to try to sell him.

The club said on their website this evening that they had made the decision following a disciplinary hearing, also fining the player two weeks' wages.

"Exeter City Football Club will not tolerate abuse of anyone, in whatever form, and would like to extend its apologies to all those who were offended by Danny Coles's behaviour on Twitter," read the statement.

Coles has made 123 appearances for Exeter over the last three years and signed a new contract in October 2012.
