England Under-21 goalkeeper Jack Butland says that the team are "embarrassed" by their showing in the European Championships this summer.

England Under-21 goalkeeper Jack Butland has admitted that it is "difficult to understand" why the team struggled in Israel this summer.

Stuart Pearce's side exited the European Under-21 Championships in the group stages having failed to win a single match, with Butland revealing that the team are "embarrassed".

"We're embarrassed we haven't done ourselves justice. We know we are lot better than this but we can't keep saying that. We have not proved it and we can only wonder why," Butland told Sky Sports News.

"We wanted this. It's difficult to understand what went wrong we just seemed flat and not ourselves which is difficult to understand."

Butland will join Stoke City from Birmingham City this summer.
