Wayne Rooney eyes Bobby Charlton record

England captain Wayne Rooney has said that he would be "absolutely delighted" if he could break Sir Bobby Charlton's all-time goalscoring record with the Three Lions.

The Manchester United striker scored twice in last night's 3-1 win away to Scotland to move within three goals of the legendary figure, who netted 49 times.

Rooney, who also bagged a brace in Saturday's Euro 2016 qualifying win over Slovenia, told reporters: "I'm just enjoying my football at the minute.

"I'm enjoying playing for England and I've had a good run of scoring goals. I hope it continues and if that means breaking the record I'll be absolutely delighted."

The 29-year-old will have to wait at least another five months before edging closer to Charlton - whose last international appearance came 44 years ago - as England do not play again until March.
