Interim England manager Gareth Southgate hails his side's "fantastic performance" against Spain despite squandering a two-goal lead in the dying stages to draw 2-2.

Interim England manager Gareth Southgate has claimed that his side's late collapse during their 2-2 draw with Spain this evening could prove to be better for the team in the future.

England led 2-0 heading into the 89th minute at Wembley, but late goals from Iago Aspas and Isco ensured that Southgate's temporary spell ended with a draw.

Southgate acknowledged that his side need to keep the ball better, but was full of praise for the performance on the whole.

"It was a fantastic performance and I can't fault the effort. I'm pleased with the way we pressed and used the ball going forward on the counter-attack," he told ITV Sport.

"We started to tire in the second half and that's where keeping the ball better will allow us to conserve energy better.

"We played one of the best teams in the world and I can't have asked for any more. Maybe not winning will be better for us in the long run, knowing what we have to do at this level."

Southgate, who is the favourite to get the job on a permanent basis, won two and drew two of his four games as interim manager.
