Stuart Pearce reveals that he rejected the opportunity to become Fabio Capello's replacement as England boss last year.

Stuart Pearce has revealed that he rejected the opportunity to become Fabio Capello's replacement as England boss last year.

The 49-year-old will take charge of the Three Lions for the Wembley friendly with the Netherlands on Wednesday as interim boss, but he revealed that prior to the resignation of Capello, Sir Trevor Brooking contacted him about the possibility of becoming the permanent manager.

Pearce, who has been involved in the England setup since 2007, was asked whether he wanted to be considered for the leading role, as at the time, the FA were keen to retain continuity.

When asked what would happen if the FA were to offer him the job, he told The Express: "I'd tell them exactly the same as I told them 10 months ago.

"I had a conversation with my immediate boss Sir Trevor Brooking and said, at that moment in time, it's not for me.

"It's the same now. It's not for me. I'll support the man who's going to come in. Whatever the result come Wednesday, even if we won the game comfortably with a great performance, my mentality will not change.

"The pressures that go with this job are for a man with more experience than me."

Pearce will be without Wayne Rooney, Darren Bent and Tom Cleverley for the game on Wednesday, after the trio withdrew from the squad through injury.
