Stoke City's Mark Hughes "surprised" Ryan Shawcross overlooked by England

Hughes "surprised" Shawcross overlooked

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes believes that Ryan Shawcross "deserves" to be part of the England setup following Roy Hodgson's decision to overlook the defender.

The 26-year-old has not been included in the Three Lions team since 2012 and was left out once again in today's squad announcement for next week's Euro 2016 qualifiers against San Marino and Estonia.

"I have been surprised that he hasn't had a real look in," Hughes said in today's press conference. "Since I have been here he has arguably been my most consistent player. He has a lot of experience, and if you look at the England squad there is no real senior leader there.

"We have a young man here who has around 200 Premier League games behind him as a captain. My view is that he deserves another look."

Shawcross has become a regular starter for the Potters following his arrival in 2008.
