Roy Hodgson urges England fans to respect Republic of Ireland

Hodgson urges England fans to respect Ireland

England manager Roy Hodgson has urged the Three Lions fans to avoid using political or religious chants during next week's international friendly at Wembley.

The last time a friendly was arranged between the sides it had to be cancelled due to rioting by the England fans, but Hodgson is confident that the same will not happen.

"As much as we all want to win, respect for the game and for our opponents is paramount," Hodgson said in his programme notes for the game.

"This game is no different and I strongly urge everyone in the ground to show each other respect and not to chant songs that could be regarded as insulting to others - particularly from a religious or political perspective.

"I hope everyone bears that in mind, and every time we come to support our national team. In my time as England manager the support this team has received at home and abroad has been nothing short of fantastic."

Hodgson recently suggested that Gareth Barry's England career could be at an end.
