David Gold hails David Bernstein for Roy Hodgson appointment

Gold praises "brave" Bernstein

West Ham United joint-owner David Gold believes that Football Association chairman David Bernstein was shrewd to ignore pressure from the media and the public when deciding to appoint Roy Hodgson as the new England manager.

The West Bromwich Albion coach was unveiled as the permanent successor to Fabio Capello yesterday, despite Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp being the overwhelming favourite since February to take the position.

"Well done David Bernstein and your selection committee," Gold wrote on Twitter. "Had to be brave to select the best man for the job against public and media opinion."

The appointment of Hodgson has sparked criticism towards Bernstein and the English governing body. However, Liverpool skipper and England international Steven Gerrard believes that everyone should support the 64-year-old as he prepares to embark on this summer's European Championships.
