Former England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson has backed the national team's new coach Roy Hodgson to succeed in the role.

The ex-West Bromwich Albion manager landed the role over many fans' first choice Harry Redknapp, but the Swede said that Hodgson will win over the sceptics.

"Roy is a good man, he's got great international experience and I think he will do a great job. I think he's a good choice," he told talkSPORT.

"He's extremely organised. He will give a lot to England. He will organise the team, they will play good football and defend very well, which is important. It's a good choice for the whole nation.

"I was surprised about the appointment, I thought it was Harry Redknapp's job, but maybe it was the press who wanted that."

Eriksson, who took England to a World Cup quarter-final in 2002, also warned the new England manager to pay no attention to the media.

"I would tell Roy not to read the press," he added. "We should just judge him on results, you shouldn't put anything else in there. It's not good."

Hodgson was given the top job at Wembley on a four-year contract earlier this week.
