England midfielder Eric Dier urges his side to build on their performances at this summer's World Cup, but also insists that they should not be satisfied with the semis.

England midfielder Eric Dier has urged his international teammates not to be satisfied by their run to the semi-finals of the World Cup this summer.

The Three Lions made it to the last four of the competition for the first time since 1990, despite many pre-tournament predictions tipping them for a significantly earlier exit.

Unlike fellow semi-finalists Belgium, England turned down the chance of a homecoming parade, and Dier believes that it is only right that they have the mentality that only winning is good enough.

"We are excited to be playing in England after the World Cup. During the tournament, it was difficult for us to really understand what things were like back home. Hopefully we can feel a bit of that on Saturday and Tuesday as well. But for me the World Cup is the past. We didn't win it. From my point of view it was right that there wasn't a parade," he told the Evening Standard.

"We had a fantastic tournament, we brought unity to the nation which was needed at the time and everyone got behind us. It was incredible to be a part of, but we need to have that mentality where we should never be satisfied. There is real stability at the moment, the manager wants that within the squad as well, to make everyone feel like they are a part of something. With that being the case, it's easier to build something.

"It's a great time to be a part of the England set-up. The youth teams have been really successful recently and that is very promising for the future, plus the senior team obviously had such a fantastic World Cup. There is a lot of positivity and happiness around the England camp at the moment. It is quite different to what the general public and everyone is used to."

England will return to action for the first time since the World Cup when they host Spain in their inaugural UEFA Nations League match on Saturday.
