Burnley defender Michael Keane replaces injured Glen Johnson in England squad

Burnley defender Michael Keane receives his first England call-up following Glen Johnson's withdrawal due to injury.

Burnley defender Michael Keane has received his first call-up to the England senior squad after Glen Johnson was forced to withdraw due to injury.

Johnson was a surprise inclusion in Gareth Southgate's squad for World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Slovenia having not played for his country since 2014, but an injury has forced the Stoke City full-back out of the setup.

Keane, who came through Manchester United's academy before joining Burnley in 2015, has been capped at all England youth levels, with the majority of his Under-21 caps coming under Southgate.

In fact, the 23-year-old defender, who has impressed at Turf Moor over the past year, made 16 appearances for the Young Lions under Southgate between 2013 and 2016.

The U21s boss is in interim charge of the senior team following Sam Allardyce's departure last week.
