Wayne Rooney 'honoured' to equal Sir Bobby Charlton goalscoring record

Rooney 'honoured' to equal Charlton tally

England striker Wayne Rooney has described equalling Sir Bobby Charlton's scoring record as a "huge honour" after moving level with the 1966 World Cup winner on netting 49 goals for the Three Lions.

The 29-year-old Manchester United forward scored a penalty in his side's Euro 2016 qualifying 6-0 win in San Marino to equal Charlton's tally.

Rooney told BBC Sport: "To be level with Sir Bobby is a huge honour, a great moment and I am very proud of it. Hopefully I will surpass that and become the outright leader."

England, who have now qualified for the competition's finals in France, will face Switzerland on Tuesday at Wembley.
