Shearer plays down England's chances

Alan Shearer does not believe that England are capable of winning Euro 2012 this summer.

The former Newcastle United striker was part of the England squad that reached the semi-finals of the competition back in 1996.

Discussing the nation's chances in Poland and Ukraine over the coming weeks, Shearer has insisted that the Three Lions should aim to emulate the side he was part of.

"I can't see us winning it," he told BBC Sport. "I think it's the first time I can remember when we've gone into a tournament without huge expectations.

"I think maybe a semi-final position for England."

England begin their campaign on Monday afternoon against France.
