England boss Roy Hodgson doesn't want expectations of striker Danny Welbeck to be too high.

England manager Roy Hodgson has played down the hype surrounding Danny Welbeck and has warned against expecting too much from the striker.

The Manchester United forward has made an impressive start to his international career and scored a sensational winning goal in the 3-2 win over Sweden on Friday. However Hodgson is keen to avoid putting too much pressure on the 21-year-old.

"I would do well to encourage you not to put too much pressure on the lad," said Hodgson.

"Before we build him up to the skies to knock him down, we should remember he has a lot of time ahead of him.

"I am happy with the progress he is making. The fact is he has broken into a team like Manchester United, then got games in the national team when he could still play for the Under-21s.

"He had a wonderful season with Manchester United and Sir Alex [Ferguson] has high hopes for him."

Welbeck has now won seven England caps and scored twice for the Three Lions as they prepare to face Ukraine in their final Group D game on Tuesday.
