Fran Escriba bemoans Mestalla defeat

Elche boss Fran Escriba says that he was proud of his side's performance at the Mestalla on Sunday despite their 2-1 defeat to Valencia.

Elche boss Fran Escriba believes that his side deserved to take something from their La Liga clash with Valencia on Sunday.

Coro cancelled out a Pablo Piatti strike to leave the two teams on terms after 28 minutes, but Dani Parejo's second-half effort secured all the points for the home side in a 2-1 victory.

"Losing is a possible result but it wasn't in our plans and after the 90 minutes we deserved more," he told reporters at a press conference.

"We're satisfied with the performances, chances and attitudes but not the result. Faced with a big team in a big stadium we showed our faces and I think we deserved to equalise.

"We would have liked a worse performance but a point. It's gruelling. We have five games to go but if we keep on this path we will be close to our target. In this league we can only think about the next game. Nobody knows how many points will be needed for safety."

As it stands, Elche sit 15th in the table, just four points outside of the relegation zone.
