Live Commentary: Doncaster Rovers 0-2 Derby County - as it happened

Sports Mole's live text commentary of Doncaster Rovers vs. Derby County at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Hello, and welcome to Sports Mole's live text commentary of Doncaster Rovers vs. Derby County at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Derby County must win to keep their slim hopes of automatic promotion alive after Burnley won 1-0 away at Blackpool earlier today.

The hosts, meanwhile, are just three points above the Championship relegation zone, so a win would be crucial for Paul Dickov's side.

Please note that kickoff is at 7:30pm.

Thanks for joining me for this live text commentary of Doncaster Rovers vs. Derby County. Can Derby put Burnley's promotion party on hold until at least Monday? We will soon find out!

Just before kickoff, let's take a glance at the starting lineups.

Doncaster Rovers starting XI: Johnstone, Tamas, Quinn, Meite, Stevens, Keegan, Furman, Coppinger, Cotterill, Brown, Sharp

Doncaster Rovers substitutes: Maxted, McCullogh, De Val, McCombe, Ferguson, Robinson, Duffy

Derby County starting XI: Grant, Forsyth, Bryson, Keogh, Martin, Russell, Hughes, Buxton, Wisdom, Thorne, Bamford

Derby County substitutes: Hendrick, Ward, Eustace, Sammon, Whitbred, Dawkins, Legzdins

The teams are out on the pitch at the Keepmoat Stadium! One change for Donacster then, as Enda Stevens comes in at left-back.

KICKOFF: We are underway.

CLOSE! Andy Keogh rolls a pass back to his goalkeeper, who slips as the pass is played! But Lee Grant just about gets back and manages to control the ball on the line! That would have been a calamitous start for the visitors!

Doncaster have certainly started as the better of the two sides here, but Derby will look to counter attack with their pace.

Patrick Bamford is penalised for a high challenge as Abdoulaye Meite stooped to head the ball clear.

Derby have managed to get their foot on the ball since that bright opening spell for the home side. Many of their attacks seem to stem from George Thorne, who is collecting the ball from his two centre-backs every time Derby gain possession.

Not much in the way of action since that slip by Lee Grant.

Johnny Russell latches onto a long ball down the left channel and he does well to pick out Patrick Bamford. He, in turn, tees up Craig Bryson, whose shot is blocked. Good approach play by Derby there.

Wasteful from David Cotterill, who pounces on a loose ball and runs at the Derby defence. The home side have a 3 on 3 situation, but Cotterill seems to panic and balloons the ball over the bar from 30 yards when there seemed to be better options available.

Craig Forsyth stabs a ball into the ball, which Chris Martin flicks on at the near post, and Sam Johnstone has to tip the ball over the bar to be sure. Doncaster manage to scramble the resulting corner clear, but it is another corner to the visitors.

Derby are content to keep the ball on the edge of the Doncaster box, but a poor pass eventually allows the home side to clear.

Derby win possession in midfield and break through Johnny Russell, who wins a corner off the shins of Gabriel Tamas.

BOOKING: Craig Bryson picks up a yellow card for a cynical foul on James Coppinger. The Doncaster winger was away down the right wing after controlling a superb 50-yard throw by Sam Johnstone!

Derby are very much back in the ascendency here. They are dominating possession so far, and have had 60% of the ball.

CHANCE! David Cotterill sprays a delightful 60-yard pass to James Coppinger, and the ball is swung into the box, where Chris Brown's header forces Lee Grant to tip his effort over the bar.

Abdoulaye Meite gets his head to the ball from the corner, but Derby clear and counter-attack in numbers. However, Patrick Bamford's low cross is cut out.

David Cotterill cuts inside from the left wing and fires towards goal, but his shot is blocked. Then, Chris Brown heads at Lee Grant from Gabriel Tamas's cross. Encouraging signs for the hosts.

Will Hughes finds a pocket of space of the right-hand side of the box, but the youngster blazes his cross high across the face of goal.

This game really is end-to-end! Andre Wisdom crosses the ball into the box, but Sam Johnstone gathers and quickly releases David Cotterill.

Will Hughes is penalised for colliding with a Doncaster defender. The replays suggested it should have been given the other way.

Derby clear a Doncaster corner...

David Cotterill has been buzzing around everywhere, and he nicks the ball off the feet of George Thorne and digs out a left-footed cross, but Derby clear with ease. The 26-year-old looks as though he is the main man for the home side.

Andre Wisdom strides out of defence and advances towards the Doncaster penalty area, but he slices a pass straight at Sam Johnstone.

James Coppinger seems to be tripped by Jake Buxton as he races down the right flank, but no free kick is awarded.

This game has failed to get going, in all honesty. There have been a couple of half-chances for either side, but nothing clear-cut. The closest we have come to a goal is when Andy Keogh almost passed the ball into his own net in the fourth minute!

A very, very scrappy period of play now. Dean Furman is penalised (and not for the first time) for pushing Will Hughes as a long ball loops into the air.

Sam Johnstone gathers Johnny Russell's low cross at his near post. There was nobody gambling across the front post there for Derby. If there was, they would have had a good chance to put their side ahead.

GOAL! Doncaster Rovers 0-1 Derby County (George Thorne)

This half has been so short on quality, but that finish from George Thorne was straight out of the top drawer! Will Hughes has his back to goal and set his fellow midfielder, who strode forward and curled a measured, right-footed strike into the bottom corner from 20 yards.

HALF TIME: Doncaster Rovers 0-1 Derby County

In truth, that was a very poor half of football. But George Thorne's goal on the stroke of half time was sumptuous, and Derby are ahead!

As things stand, Derby are still mathematically in contention to be promoted. However, in reality they have only delayed Burnley's seemingly imminent promotion until Monday.

There is football in La Liga this evening, too. The league leaders Atletico Madrid are drawing 0-0 with Elche at the moment. Why don't you glance at Sian Cowper's half-time report before the second half kicks off here?

And while we are at it, read Joe Fish's match report of Burnley's 1-0 victory over Blackpool aswell.

The teams are back out at the Keepmoat Stadium ahead of the second half. Can Doncaster claw a goal or two back here?

KICKOFF: The second half is underway.

Possession being swapped regularly by the two teams at the start of the second half. Neither side can keep the ball for any length of time.

Abdoulaye Meite nips in to nick the ball off the toes of Patrick Bamford as the youngster looked to control the ball on the edge of the box.

Andre Wisdom powers forward from right-back as fizzes as cross into the box at hip height, but nobody is able to connect with the ball.

SUBSTITUTION: Jamie Ward comes on to replace Patrick Bamford. The young forward, who is on loan from Chelsea, has been in magnificent form this season, so that change is a little surprising from Steve McClaren.

Doncaster fire a couple of volleys towards goal, but they come to nothing.

CHANCE! Derby should be 2-0 up! Craig Bryson makes a great break from midfield and a wonderful through ball picks him out, but the midfielder sees his shot saved by Sam Johnstone. A great save! From the two resulting corners, Jamie Ward sees his effort deflected wide and Johnny Russell smashes a long-rage shot wide.

David Cotterill sends a long-range effort towards goal. Despite dragging it wide, it falls just in front of Billy Sharp, but the froward cannot sort his feet out in time and it drifts wide for a goal kick.

Will Hughes goes down under the challenge of Dean Furman in the penalty area, but it looked a little soft. Wonderful interchange between three or four of the Derby players to engineer that opening, though.

SUBSTITUTION: Derby make their second change, as Simon Dawkins replaces Johnny Russell.

CHANCE! Gabriel Tamas - who is sporting a magnificently decorated face mask - leaps highest from David Cotterill's free kick from the right wing, but his header spins away from goal. It was a free header for the Romanian defender, and perhaps he should have sent that header on target.

BOOKING: Paul Quinn makes a bad error in trying to send a pass to his goalkeeper and hauls down Chris Martin. The referee immediately shows him a yellow card.

SUBSTITUTION: Theo Robinson, who left Derby in the summer, comes on for Doncaster in place of Billy Sharp. Will he come back to haunt his former club?

Derby look so assured in possession, but after a period of about 20 passes, they lose the ball and Doncaster counter. Theo Robinson dinks the ball over Jake Buxton and seems to be racing away one-on-one, but the spin of the ball takes it away from the substitute and Derby clear.

BOOKING: Chris Martin of Derby picks up a silly yellow card for deliberately delaying a Doncaster throw in.

Abdoulaye Meite cuts out another Andre Wisdom cross at his near post. Despite primarily being a centre-back, Wisdom has got forward on a number of occasions for Steve McClaren's side this evening.

David Cotterill cuts in from the left wing and sends an audacious shot well over the bar from 30 yards. A sign of frustration for the hosts, perhaps?

SUBSTITUTION: A second throw of the dice for Paul Dickov, who sends on Mark Duffy to replace Dean Furman.

CHANCE! The pace of Theo Robinson has just added another threat to Doncaster's attacking play, and Lee Grant has to dash from his line to deny the 25-year-old. The ball through to the striker took him slightly wider than he would have liked, so it wasn't a golden opportunity, but it was a good chance nonetheless.

Jamie Ward tests Sam Johnstone with a strike from 25 yards. It didn't have too much power behind it, but it did bounce just before the on-loan stopper, and he did well to gather it on the skiddy surface.

GOAL! Doncaster Rovers 0-2 Derby County (Chris Martin)

Chris Martin extends his right leg to flick the ball into the roof of the net from six yards out to put Derby County 2-0 ahead. It was a delightful cross from the right wing by Jamie Ward that made the goal. Surely that is game over?

SUBSTITUTION: Jeff Hendrick comes on for Will Hughes, as Steve McClaren makes his third and final change.

The home side look a little short of ideas here. They'll need a lifeline soon if they are to get anything from the game.

Sam Johnstone launches the ball upfield, but Mark Duffy loses the ball and Derby carry the ball forward and away from danger.

Derby are just keeping the ball now. They have been incredibly assured in possession all evening, and that quality is paying dividends now, as they look to run the clock down with just three minutes remaining.

Mark Duffy swings a cross in from the left wing. Lee Grant spills it, but gathers at the second attempt.

SUBSTITUTION: Chris Brown is lying on the turf at the Keepmoat and hobbles off the pitch. Maarc de Val replaces him. That injury is something that Paul DIckov could have done without as his side now have just three games to stay in the Championship. He will be hoping the injury isn't too serious.

Four minutes of added time to be played.

CLOSE! Chris Martin flicks the ball around the corner to Jamie Ward, who advances down the right wing at pace. He then steadies himself and dinks a shot towards the far corner, which Sam Johnstone does well to glance past the far post with his fingertips. A great effort by Ward, and an equally impressive save by Johnstone, who has impressed this evening.

BOOKING: Marc de Val has only been on the pitch for five minutes, but he is booked for bringing down Jamie Ward.

FULL TIME: Doncaster Rovers 0-2 Derby County

Derby County have done a very professional job here. Burnley are as good as promoted after their 1-0 win at Blackpool earlier, but Derby County are doing everything in their power to clutch onto any slim hopes of usurping them. This evening's 2-0 victory was well deserved.

George Thorne - who impressed throughout - scored a delightful goal to put Derby ahead on the stroke of half time, and Chris Martin wrapped up the win with 10 minutes remaining.

Before I leave, let's just take a glance at the Championship table. Burnley now need just two more points to be promoted, but Derby are not giving up without a fight. At the other end of the table, Doncaster lie in 19th place, three points head of Millwall. However, the Lions have a game in hand on Paul Dickov's side.

That's all from me today. Thanks for joining me, and don't forget to check out Sports Mole this weekend, as we have lots of Easter treats in store for you, including extensive coverage of all the Premier League games on Sunday! Good night!
