DC United survive Philadelphia Union barrage to secure unlikely win

DC United survive Philadelphia barrage

An early goal by Chris Rolfe has given DC United a narrow 1-0 win away at the Philadephia Union in today's Major League Soccer clash at the PPL Park.

After just six minutes played, Christian Fernandez set up his 31-year-old teammate, who duly fired home for his 50th MLS goal.

The home side, shocked at going behind so early in the game, stepped it up a gear and began pressing forward in a bid to pull a goal back.

Throughout most of the first half, the Washington DC outfit were under the cosh and had to fend off chances by Andrew Wenger, Raymon Gaddis, Amobi Okugo and Cristian Maidana, but Philadelphia were unable to equalise.

Though the visitors attempted to launch attacks of their own in the second half, John Hackworth's side kept on asserting their dominance in the game and very nearly scored through Vincent Nogueira.

Despite getting 12 shots in against the away side, with six on target, Philadelphia were unable to score and make up for their early goal concession, and DC United duly held on for an unlikely win.
