Ashley Cole left out of England World Cup squad

Chelsea full-back Ashley Cole is left out of the England squad for this summer's World Cup having turned down a standby role behind Luke Shaw.

Chelsea full-back Ashley Cole has been left out of the England squad for this summer's World Cup in Brazil.

Cole has played second fiddle to Cesar Azpilicueta at Stamford Bridge for the vast majority of the season, leading to speculation that he could be omitted from Roy Hodgson's squad.

The emergence of Southampton full-back Luke Shaw has also hurt Cole's chances, with many people expecting Hodgson to favour the youth of the 18-year-old over a player who would almost certainly be featuring in his last World Cup.

However, the 33-year-old has won his place in the Chelsea team back in recent weeks, putting in a number of impressive displays to enhance his case for inclusion in the World Cup squad.

According to The Telegraph, though, Hodgson has opted for Shaw ahead of Cole, who will not be involved at all having turned down a standby role.

The decision would effectively end Cole's illustrious international career, which has seen him make 107 appearances for the Three Lions over 13 years.

Hodgson is expected to name his provisional squad for the tournament tomorrow, with Leighton Baines the other left-back alongside Shaw.
