Chelsea are reportedly preparing to reignite their interest in a Portugal international as they bid to strengthen the middle of their backline.

Chelsea have reportedly turned their attention to a Portugal international as they bid to strengthen the middle of their backline.

While the Blues are currently focused on trying to achieve Champions League qualification and win the Conference League, plans are being put together ahead of the summer transfer window.

The West Londoners have already suffered a blow through Bournemouth centre-back Dean Huijsen choosing to sign for Real Madrid.

As a result, consideration is now being given to securing the services of an alternative, the assumption being that at least one squad member will be sold.

According to Chelsea News, the club's recruitment team are ready to reignite their interest in a former target.

Araujo back on Chelsea radar?

The report alleges that Chelsea are ready to consider making a formal bid for the signature of Benfica star Tomas Araujo.

While he has been admired by Chelsea for some time, the Premier League giants were not prepared to go anywhere near his €80m (£67.48m) release clause the last time that they were interested.

However, it is suggested that the 23-year-old may now be targeted for somewhere in the region of €50m (£42.18m) and €55m (£46.39m).

Whether Benfica would consider such a proposal remains to be seen, particularly when the player still has over four years remaining on his contract.

Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain are also said to be monitoring the situation, aware that there may come a time when Araujo craves a new challenge.

Are Chelsea realistic contenders?

Having come through the Benfica academy setup, Araujo has 67 appearances to his name, contributing two goals and three assists.

All but four of those have come across the last two seasons, emphasising his importance to the squad, but Benfica could substantially boost their position with the relevant financial regulations with a sale.

With Araujo capable of playing at right-back and centre-back, it is clear to see why Chelsea see value in signing him. He also fits the desired profile in terms of age.

That said, PSG could emerge as favourites having already signing Portuguese stars such as Nuno Mendes, Vitinha, Joao Neves and Goncalo Ramos in recent seasons.
