West Ham United topple Chelsea

Second-half goals from Carlton Cole, Mohamed Diame and Modibo Maiga see West Ham United come from behind to beat London rivals Chelsea at Upton Park.

The Blues are now without a win in seven Premier League games, after Carlton Cole, Mohamed Diame and Modibo Maiga responded to Juan Mata's early strike.

Chelsea were the better side in the first half and broke the deadlock on 13 minutes when Mata tapped home from close range following Fernando Torres's pull-back.

Torres and Mata then both flashed fierce strikes wide before the hosts began to apply some pressure of their own.

The Hammers thought that they had equalised on 33 minutes when Kevin Nolan bundled home from close range. However, his effort was ruled out for a James Collins foul on Branislav Ivanovic.

Peter Cech, who was shown a yellow card for handling the ball outside of his penalty area, then made a fingertip save to deny Nolan again in first-half stoppage time.

Roared on by a sell-out crowd, West Ham continued to apply pressure after the break and they levelled the scores with a conversational goal on 63 minutes.

Matthew Jarvis swung in a high cross from the left and Cole, climbing all over Ivanovic, nodded the ball beyond Cech at his near post.

Within seconds of the equaliser, Chelsea came agonisingly close to regaining their lead.

Eden Hazard was denied by a brilliant parry from Jussi Jaaskelainen and the rebound fell to Torres, who could only direct his effort straight at the goalkeeper.

Moments later, Mata struck the post with a venomous free kick from 25 yards.

As Chelsea pushed forward in search of a winner, they looked vulnerable against the counter-attack.

With eight minutes remaining, Noble sent Jarvis through on goal, but the former Wolves winger saw his low effort tipped around the post by Cech.

From the resultant corner, Ashley Cole did well to head Winston Reid's goalbound header off the line.

However, West Ham edged ahead four minutes from time when Cole teed up Diame, who powered home from 18 yards.

Maiga sealed the victory in stoppage time, smashing in a rebound after Matthew Taylor had been denied by Cech.
