Jose Mourinho doubting Chelsea philosophy

Jose Mourinho admits that he may have to re-assess his philosophy at Chelsea after suffering his fifth defeat of the season in the 2-1 loss to Sunderland in the Capital One Cup tonight.

Jose Mourinho has admitted that he may be forced to re-assess his Chelsea philosophy after the Blues slumped to a 2-1 defeat to Sunderland in the quarter final of the Capital One Cup tonight.

Mourinho's men looked poised to book a place in the semi-final of the competition, with Lee Cattermole's own goal proving the difference between the sides until Fabio Borini struck an 89th-minute equaliser to send the tie to extra time.

The prospect of a penalty shootout loomed large after both teams cancelled each other for the majority of the additional 30 minutes, only for Ki Sung-Yueng to strike the winner in the closing stages to seal the Black Cats' place in the semi final.

The defeat was the fifth of the season in all competitions for the West London outfit, and the Portuguese coach admits that he could have to re-think his team's approach going forward.

Speaking to reporters, the 50-year-old said: "Maybe the way to rectify it is not to concede goals, maybe the way is to have a different approach.

"When you are a very offensive team and you don't score enough goals to win matches, maybe the right approach is to be more defensive, concede less goals and win matches with the few goals we score."

Chelsea, who sit third in the Premier League, face leaders Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Monday evening.
