Good evening and welcome to Sports Mole's live text coverage of the UEFA Super Cup between Liverpool and Chelsea from Istanbul. The match pits the winners of the Champions League against the Europa League holders, and it should be a fascinating battle between two of England's biggest clubs. Stay tuned for live minute-by-minute updates of the affair from the Vodafone Park in Istanbul.

TEAMS!

LIVERPOOL: Adrian; Gomez, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Fabinho, Henderson, Milner; Oxlade-Chamberlain, Salah, Mane

CHELSEA: Kepa; Azpilicueta, Christensen, Zouma, Emerson; Kovacic, Jorginho, Kante; Pedro, Giroud, Pulisic

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has made five changes to the team that started against Norwich on Friday night, with Adrian, Joel Matip, James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Sadio Mane all coming in. Alisson Becker is injured for the Champions League winners, while the likes of Roberto Firmino and Trent Alexander-Arnold have dropped to the bench. Interesting from Klopp!

As for Chelsea, head coach Frank Lampard has made three changes to the side that started against Manchester United. In come N'Golo Kante, Olivier Giroud and Christian Pulisic, with Mason Mount, Ross Barkley and Tammy Abraham dropping out as Lampard looks for experience. It is the same back four that conceded four at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon, though.

Liverpool, who qualified for tonight's game after winning last season's Champions League, opened their 2019-20 Premier League campaign with a 4-1 win over Norwich City on Friday. Chelsea, meanwhile, landed the Europa League at the end of last season by overcoming Arsenal.

The Blues made a disappointing start to life under new head coach Lampard, though, as they suffered a 4-0 defeat at Man United in their league opener on Sunday afternoon.

Here we go then - the pre-match handshakes have been undertaken and the flags have been exchanged. It must be said that there is a wonderful atmosphere inside the stadium, while it is a historic night for female referee Stephanie Frappart. Let's hope for a cracking game tonight.

KICKOFF:  Liverpool kick things off in Istanbul...

... Chelsea have already looked long early on towards Giroud, which will surely be a tactic in tonight's match. Liverpool are the team looking to settle with the ball in the opening exchanges.

Not too much to report in terms of talking points in the opening four minutes. Liverpool are trying to get hold of the ball but Chelsea appear to have a good shape - a 4-3-3 with Kante and Kovacic either side of Jorginho, who will be looking to control the match here.

Pulisic breaks into the Liverpool box, only for Matip to come across and make the clearance. It is interesting see Matip in the XI tonight, with Joe Gomez moving across to right-back at the expense of Alexander-Arnold. Liverpool now have the ball in Chelsea's half of the field.

Mane tries a bicycle kick inside the Chelsea box but Christensen makes the block.

SAVE!  Kepa has to drop down to keep out a header from Matip as Liverpool threaten for the second time in a matter of seconds. It was a towering header from the centre-back there.

Pass, pass, pass from Liverpool as they attempt to work a way through. Mane is through the middle for the Reds rather than Salah, which was thought to be the case ahead of kickoff.

Kepa does well to hold onto a cross from Fabinho after the ball had broken for the Brazilian midfielder in a dangerous position. Again it is Liverpool causing the problems here.

Salah now has a shot blocked by Zouma with Chelsea struggling to get out of their own half at this moment. You do get the feeling that the first goal - if there indeed is one - will be huge.

CLOSE!  Pedro hits one from distance but the ball was always moving wide of Adrian's post.

Super defending from Christensen to clear a cross from Henderson, who had been looking to pick out the head of Mane with a dangerous cross. Brilliant from the Chelsea centre-back.

SAVE!  Big moment for Liverpool as Oxlade-Chamberlain releases Salah in a dangerous position, but the attacker sees his low effort saved by Kepa. Smart goalkeeping there!

SHOT!  Half-chance for Chelsea this time as Giroud is released by Pedro into a shooting position, but the Frenchman pulls his effort wide of the far post. End-to-end football here.

In terms of what is ahead, Liverpool will attempt to make it back-to-back Premier League wins at the start of the new season when they travel to Southampton on Saturday, while Chelsea will be looking to bounce back from the Man United loss at home to Leicester City on Sunday.

Excellent defending from Robertson to come across and challenge Pedro after the Chelsea attacker had found himself inside the Liverpool box. Brilliant from the Scotland international.

OFF THE BAR!  Oh my word! Brilliant from Pedro as the Spaniard breaks into the Liverpool box before striking towards goal, but the attacker's effort comes off the crossbar! Some effort!

SHOT!  The woodwork harmed Chelsea at the weekend and that has again been the case tonight. The Blues have another half-chance as Giroud tries his luck, but the bicycle kick is wide.

Giroud breaks into a dangerous position inside the Liverpool box before striking towards goal, but the offside flag had been raised. Adrian actually made a smart save despite the offside.

Little over 15 minutes of the first half remaining and it has been an entertaining game - pretty even for the most part. Both teams have had chances to make the breakthrough, Salah having the best opportunity for Liverpool and Pedro for Chelsea. More of the same please.

Pulisic does really well inside the Liverpool box to fashion a cross towards the far post but there are no takers in a blue shirt - not sure why Giroud did not gamble for the delivery there.

CHANCE!  Big chance for Liverpool as Van Dijk rises highest inside the Chelsea box to meet a corner - Kepa got nowhere near it but the ball just landed over the crossbar. So unlucky!

SAVE!  Kepa has to keep out a header from Mane as Liverpool threaten from a corner once again. Not sure about some of the defending from Chelsea in the first half hour here.

Giroud is free once again and Jorginho looks to slide the Frenchman in, only for Matip to make an excellent block at the final moment. Good pressure from Chelsea at the moment.

Really good goalkeeping from Adrian to deny Kovacic after the midfielder had been slipped in by the dangerous Pedro. Confident work from the former West Ham United stopper.

Some expected Liverpool to run away with this game but that has simply not been the case. Chelsea have had a number of good chances to make the breakthrough in Istanbul.

No dramas for the match officials in the first 36 minutes of this match. Liverpool wanted a penalty early on for a Christensen handball but not too much has happened in terms of the officials since then. Still goalless as we approach the half-time interval here.

GOAL!  LIVERPOOL 0-1 CHELSEA (GIROUD)

GOAL!  Well, it isn't goalless anymore! Chelsea make the breakthrough in the 36th minute as Pulisic slides a brilliant pass into Giroud, who picks out the bottom corner with a fine finish. Kante also deserves huge praise for his work in the build-up. The Blues are ahead in Istanbul.

Liverpool have had their moments in this game but have struggled to make things happen on a consistent basis. The Reds have also been quite open at the back, which will concern Klopp.

The Chelsea fans are in fine voice inside the stadium, and why not? The Blues lost 4-0 to Man United at the weekend but have been very positive in the first 40 minutes of this match.

DISALLOWED GOAL!  Oh my word! Pulisic has just put the ball in the bottom corner with a wonderful effort, but the offside flag is raised! VAR are going to have a look at this incident.

DISALLOWED GOAL!  Indeed, the correct decision was made. Shame for Pulisic as he picked out the bottom corner with a wonderful finish after driving into the Liverpool box.

Not too much from Liverpool at the moment as Chelsea continue to threaten a second goal in the latter stages of the first period. Pulisic and Kante have been excellent for the Blues.

Decent bit of pressure from Liverpool in the last couple of minutes with Robertson and Salah combining in a wide area, but Chelsea have a goal kick as we approach the break.

Just the one additional minute at the end of the first half here.

HALF TIME:  LIVERPOOL 0-1 CHELSEA

So there we have it - the referee brings the first period to a close with Chelsea leading 1-0 courtesy of a brilliant finish from Giroud in the 36th minute. Brilliant first half for the Blues.

Liverpool have had their moments in the final third of the field, but it would be fair to say that the European Cup holders have been far from their best in all areas of the pitch tonight.

STATISTICS! Liverpool just about shaded the first-half possession with 51%, while they managed nine attempts. The Reds, though, registered just two attempts on target.

Chelsea, on the other hand, hit the target with two of their seven attempts. No yellow cards to report in the opening half of action. To be honest, it has not really been that type of game.

BENCH WATCH! It is difficult to say that Liverpool have a whole host of experienced attacking options in reserve, but the likes of Firmino, Lallana, Origi and Shaqiri are available tonight.

As for Chelsea, Abraham, Barkley, Batshuayi, Willian, Mount and Kenedy are all available for Lampard in the second period. It will be very interesting to see how both managers use their benches.

PLAYER WATCH! Giroud would have been frustrated not to have started against Manchester United at the weekend, but the Frenchman has made the most of his chance tonight - a super goal and a very strong first-half performance from the 32-year-old.

Both sets of players will soon walk back onto the field for the second period. It would be a surprise if either manager has made a change at the break - we will soon find out.

KICKOFF:  Chelsea resume the action in the second period...

... LIVERPOOL SUB! Half-time change for Liverpool as Oxlade-Chamberlain is replaced by Firmino, who will join Mane and Salah in the final third. Same XI for Chelsea here.

GOAL!  LIVERPOOL 1-1 CHELSEA (MANE)

GOAL!  And there is the equaliser! Liverpool level the scores in the 48th minute as Mane converts from close range after Firmino had beaten Kepa to the ball inside the box. All square in Istanbul!

Liverpool forward Sadio Mane scores against Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup on August 14, 2019© Reuters

CLOSE!  Fabinho just misses the Chelsea post with a powerful strike from distance. Some impact from Firmino it must be said. Liverpool look so much better with the Brazilian in the team.

SHOT!  Giroud can only bundle the ball behind from close range after meeting a low cross from Emerson - the Frenchman was past the near post and therefore it was a tough finish.

SAVE!  Kepa manages to adjust his body to keep out a deflected effort from Henderson after Liverpool had broken clear once again through Mane. Chelsea really need to settle here.

You do get the feeling that the next goal could be crucial, particularly if Liverpool score as Chelsea are coming under a lot of pressure in the early stages of the second period.

Salah looks to slide a pass into Firmino as Liverpool cut through Chelsea once again, but the final pass is just too strong. Chelsea are really, really struggling at the moment here.

Little under 30 minutes of normal time remaining and Liverpool are still on the front foot with Klopp's side looking for a second goal. This is a big test for Chelsea as they are not seeing much of the ball during this period of the match. Time for the likes of Willian possibly?!

No Chelsea substitutes warming up at the moment but Liverpool have a few players limbering up on the touchline. Both managers have a lot of quality on their benches tonight.

Chelsea appear to have ridden the storm in the early stages of the second period and now the Blues are on the front foot with a couple of corners in quick succession here.

Giroud is again ruled offside - not for the first time tonight. Chelsea are doing their best to get behind the Liverpool defence but the line from the Reds has been good in the second period.

LIVERPOOL SUB! Wijnaldum replaces Milner in Liverpool's second change.

Pulisic has a shot blocked behind and Liverpool clear the resulting corner as Chelsea continue to have positive moments in the final third. Good spell for Lampard's side at the moment.

We are around 20 minutes away from extra-time but you do get the feeling that there is a third goal in this match before the 90 minutes is up. When will Lampard look to his bench?

SAVE!  Mane pokes the ball into the arms of Kepa but it is a comfortable save for the Chelsea goalkeeper. Still 1-1 as we head into the final 20 minutes of the UEFA Super Cup.

Not an awful lot to report in the last couple of minutes here. Neither manager will want extra-time ahead of their Premier League matches this weekend but that might be the case.

Mount and Abraham could well enter for Chelsea as the pair are engaged in a conversation with the bench. Perhaps for Giroud and Pedro? It is hard to imagine Lampard going for two up top.

CHELSEA SUBS! Indeed the changes are made as Abraham and Mount replace Giroud and Pulisic, who have both impressed for the Blues tonight.

SAVE!  Oh my goodness! Stunning save from Kepa! The Chelsea goalkeeper first manages to keep out a low strike from Salah before somehow reacting to push a close-range Van Dijk effort onto the crossbar. It is quite stunning from the former Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper!

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has a shot saved in the UEFA Super Cup against Chelsea on August 14, 2019© Reuters

Van Dijk does not look too happy for Liverpool here - might be carrying a little knock.

YELLOW CARD!  Azpilicueta (Chelsea) is booked for a foul on Mane.

CLOSE!  Salah sees his free kick hit the top of the wall and drop over the crossbar.

Little over five minutes of normal time remaining here, and the score is still level. I said that there would be another goal in this but extra-time is looking very likely at the moment.

Better from Chelsea in the last couple of minutes as Pedro has a strike blocked by Van Dijk before Mount looks to find Abraham with a low cross. The Blues are on the front foot.

DISALLOWED GOAL!  Another disallowed goal for Chelsea as Mount finds the bottom corner with a brilliant finish, only for the flag to eventually go up. Liverpool are quite fortunate again here.

CHELSEA SUB! Tomori replaces Christensen for Chelsea.

YELLOW CARD!  Henderson (Liverpool) is booked for a foul on Emerson.

Not long left here and it does appear that extra-time and possibly penalties will be needed to separate these two teams, unless someone comes up with a very, very late winner.

Mount has been bright for Chelsea since entering the frame and again he finds Emerson with a smart pass, the left-back's cross is blocked, though, and Liverpool can clear their lines.

CLOSE!  Zouma heads over from close range as another chance comes and goes for Chelsea. Not long left in terms of normal time, with extra-time very much on the agenda here.

We are into the first of two additional minutes here.

Kovacic fouls Salah and that could be that in terms of normal time.

END OF 90 MINUTES:  LIVERPOOL 1-1 CHELSEA

Extra-time it is! Both teams had chances to score a second in the second period but it wasn't to be. Extra-time is certain and penalties are possible in the 2019 UEFA Super Cup.

KEY MOMENT! How on earth did Kepa keep out this attempt from Van Dijk? The Dutchman looked to be scoring from close range off a rebound from the Chelsea goalkeeper, but the Spaniard somehow flung out an arm to deflect the ball onto the woodwork.

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has a shot saved in the UEFA Super Cup against Chelsea on August 14, 2019© Reuters

Firmino made a huge difference to Liverpool in the early stages of the second period. Chelsea, though, did well to ride the storm because it would have been easy to concede a second.

KICKOFF:  LIVERPOOL SUB! Alexander-Arnold has replaced Robertson for Liverpool, who have got the extra-time period underway in Istanbul...

... both managers can make another change if they wish. You do get the feeling that one goal wins this, particularly when considering that there are some very tired legs out there.

SAVE!  Comfortable save for Kepa to keep out an attempt from Gomez.

Possession football from Liverpool at the moment, who have been on the front foot since play resumed here. Not an awful lot from Chelsea in the first five minutes here.

GOAL!  LIVERPOOL 2-1 CHELSEA (MANE)

GOAL!  Oh my word! What a finish! Wonderful from Mane as the Senegal international picks out the top corner with a powerful attempt after being found by Firmino just inside the Chelsea box.

SAVE!  Adrian has to keep out a low attempt from Abraham as Chelsea threaten to hit back. Lampard's side are not going to sit back and take this seemingly as it has been a good response.

PENALTY!  Chelsea have a penalty as Adrian brings Abraham to the ground!

PENALTY!  VAR are going to check this...

PENALTY!  ... it stands!

GOAL!  LIVERPOOL 2-2 CHELSEA (JORGINHO, PEN)

GOAL!  Jorginho sticks the ball into the bottom corner for 2-2 here.

CHELSEA SUB! Barkley replaces Kovacic for Chelsea here.

LIVERPOOL SUB! Mane is replaced by Origi for Liverpool.

Not long left in the first half of extra-time. I expected the first 15 minutes to be fairly dull but two goals have arrived and plenty of entertainment. It has been a very good game here.

CHANCE!  Huge chance for Chelsea as Pedro finds Abraham with a low cross but the striker somehow turns the ball wide of the post. Huge chance for the young striker there.

HALF TIME IN EXTRA TIME:  LIVERPOOL 2-2 CHELSEA

Still all square then! Mane scored a second for Liverpool to send the Reds 2-1 ahead before Jorginho levelled from the penalty spot. Will there be a winner in the next 15 minutes?

KICKOFF:  Chelsea resume the action here...

... you do get the feeling that there is another goal in this as there are some very tired legs out there. Penalties will arrive if there is not a goal in the next 10 minutes or so.

YELLOW CARD!  Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool) is booked for a foul on Mount.

Liverpool will attempt to make it back-to-back Premier League wins at the start of the new season when they travel to Southampton on Saturday, while Chelsea will be looking for their first victory of the campaign at home to Leicester City on Sunday. Neither manager wants extra-time!

Not an awful lot to report in the last couple of minutes. Suddenly the pitch will feel very heavy for both sets of players, who really could have done without the extra-time period here.

Kante is still charging around the field for Chelsea. Neither side are creating much at the moment, though, as penalties move closer. Is there going to be some late drama here?

SAVE!  Smart save from Adrian to keep out a strike from Mount!

SHOT!  Pedro misses the Liverpool post with a low strike!

It is almost 12.30am local time in Istanbul and the match continues. Chelsea are the team on the front foot looking for a third goal but penalties look very likely at the moment.

Chelsea have certainly been the better side in the second half of extra-time but it does appear that penalties will be needed to decide the winner of the 2019 UEFA Super Cup.

FULL TIME:  LIVERPOOL 2-2 CHELSEA (MATCH GOES TO PENALTIES)

Right then - penalties to decide the UEFA Super Cup. Been a long night!

LIVERPOOL 1-0* CHELSEA - FIRMINO SCORES! Firmino finds the bottom corner to send Liverpool ahead in the shootout.

LIVERPOOL *1-1 CHELSEA - JORGINHO SCORES Jorginho finds the bottom corner to level the shootout.

LIVERPOOL 2-1* CHELSEA - FABINHO SCORES! Fabinho finds the bottom corner to send Liverpool ahead in the shootout once again.

LIVERPOOL *2-2 CHELSEA - BARKLEY SCORES! Into the top corner and Chelsea level the scores at 2-2 here.

LIVERPOOL 3-2* CHELSEA - ORIGI SCORES! Origi finds the bottom corner despite the best efforts of Kepa, who got a touch to the striker's effort.

LIVERPOOL *3-3 CHELSEA - MOUNT SCORES! Mount finds the top corner for 3-3. Excellent penalties from both teams thus far here.

LIVERPOOL 4-3* CHELSEA - ALEXANDER-ARNOLD SCORES! Alexander-Arnold manages to find the bottom corner despite the best efforts of Kepa.

LIVERPOOL *4-4 CHELSEA - EMERSON SCORES! Emerson goes down the middle and we are at 4-4 in this incredible shootout.

LIVERPOOL 5-4* CHELSEA - SALAH SCORES! Salah finds the bottom corner to make it 5-4 Liverpool. Over to Chelsea now and Tammy Abraham.

LIVERPOOL 5-4 CHELSEA - ABRAHAM MISSES! Abraham sees his effort kept out by Adrian and Liverpool have won the UEFA Super Cup on penalties!

FULL TIME:  LIVERPOOL 2-2 CHELSEA (LIVERPOOL WIN 5-4 ON PENALTIES)

So there we have it. Liverpool win the UEFA Super Cup with a 5-4 penalty win over Chelsea following a 2-2 draw in Istanbul. What a night of football! That's just about it from me tonight but be sure to join us again very soon for more live coverage. Until next time!
