Rio Ferdinand hails "great specimen" Edouard Mendy

Rio Ferdinand has hailed "great specimen" Edouard Mendy after the Chelsea goalkeeper extended his run without conceding to six matches.

The Senegal international has been a huge success at Stamford Bridge since arriving from Rennes in a £22m deal at the end of September.

Mendy has conceded just one goal in seven outings in all competitions, with his latest clean sheet coming in Wednesday's 3-0 win over his former club in the Champions League.

Manchester United legend Ferdinand has been impressed by what he has seen from the 28-year-old, who was brought in as a replacement for Kepa Arrizabalaga.

"We watched him here against Palace earlier in the season and I think it was his first game and he was very assured," he told BT Sport.

"He is a huge size, a great specimen, but the guy makes saves. He makes important saves at important times.

"He made a couple of mistakes at Old Trafford [against Manchester United] with his feet but it didn't affect him at all. He didn't appear to drop any confidence.

"The guy looks as though he has come here to say 'look, I'm here to make saves'."

Mendy has made eight saves in his first three Premier League matches - giving him a 100% save-completion rate - compared to only four from Kepa this term (57%).
