Catania demoted to Italian third tier

Catania have been demoted to the third tier of Italian football for their involvement in a match-fixing scandal in last season's Serie B.

The club, which finished 15th last term, saw five games between March and April this year come under investigation by the Italian Football Federation.

As a result of the investigation, the Sicilian outfit has been demoted, seen 12 points deducted this season and fined £107,111 (€150,000).

Catania, who have also seen club president Antonino Pulvirenti banned for five years and fined, have said that they will appeal against the decision.
