Report: Catania face relegation for match-fixing

Catania could reportedly be relegated due to the match-fixing scandal that has engulfed the club.

President Antonino Pulvirenti was arrested last week after being accused of fixing games so that the club would avoid dropping out of Serie B last season.

The club had suffered relegation from Serie A in the 2013-14 season and they finished three points above the relegation playoff places last term.

According to ITA Sport Press, Catania will be demoted and will also face a severe points penalty for next season.

Catania have released a statement today saying that Pulvirenti made contact "with other parties in order to influence the outcome of several matches", but that he believed his contacts "did not have any real effect on the matches in question".
