Carlisle United shock Blackburn Rovers on penalties

Carlisle shock Blackburn on pens

Blackburn Rovers have joined the list of Championship clubs humbled by lower league opposition in the first round of the Capital One Cup.

The Lancashire outfit went out on penalties to Carlisle United, despite having twice led at Brunton Park.

David Amoo put the League One side ahead early on, and the Blues were able to see that advantage out until half time.

However, a quickfire double from Tom Cairney and Chris Taylor saw Gary Bowyer's men turn the game on its head after the restart.

A 62nd-minute strike from Lewis Guy was enough to force extra time, but Alan Judge fired Rovers back into the lead in the 94th minute.

Cairney turned from hero to villain in the 99th minute as he received a second yellow card for unsporting behaviour, and the home side piled on the pressure.

It eventually told when Amoo bagged his second of the evening six minutes from time, which meant the game had to be decided by a penalty shootout.

Young striker Alex Salmon - in only his third appearance for the club - sliced Carlisle's first kick wide of the mark, but Taylor let them right back in it when he blazed over the bar.

When Josh Morris saw his penalty rattle the crossbar, Rovers were on the brink of an early exit.

It was left to David Symington to send Carlisle into the second round, and he did so by smashing down the middle.
