Preview: Burnley vs. Millwall - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's Championship clash between Burnley and Millwall, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Following their biggest domestic victory since the 2015-16 season, Burnley return to Turf Moor for a date with Millwall in Championship action on Tuesday.

The Clarets extended their unbeaten run to four straight matches in all competitions with a 5-1 win over Wigan Athletic this past weekend, while the Lions went goalless for a second successive fixture, losing 1-0 to Reading.

Vincent Kompany could not contain his joy on Saturday, and rightfully so, as his Burnley players looked impressive from the get-go, winning their first road game of the new season.

The Belgian boss saw a team who fought hard for every loose ball against the Latics while doing a splendid job at recognizing the space and taking advantage of it as they find themselves within three points of first-place after six matches.

In the top-flight last season, the Clarets were bottom of the league in terms of open play sequences (112), but under Kompany, they have excelled in that department early on in this competition, with 92 sequences heading into their match against Wigan, while all five of their goals this weekend resulted from open play.

They have yet to lose at home on their current domestic campaign, coming back to draw Luton Town and Hull City (1-1) before squandering a two-goal lead versus Blackpool, conceding twice in quick succession with fewer than 20 minutes remaining.

With 11 goals scored in 2022-23, not only do Burnley lead the league in that category, but they have tallied more times in six games this season than they had in their first six fixtures of their previous two Premier League campaigns combined (eight).

Tuesday will be their first league meeting against Millwall since February 2014, when Burnley beat them 3-1 at Turf Moor, and the Clarets have not lost to the club from Bermondsey in a domestic encounter since 2011-12 (3-1).

A winning run of five consecutive matches at home in the Championship ended for Millwall last weekend as they were held to just a single shot on target versus Reading.

As a result, they have lost consecutive domestic encounters for the first time since dropping their opening three matches in January of last season.

Gary Rowett's men have consistently suffered poor starts in the early portion of the season, conceding first in four consecutive league fixtures and allowing seven goals within the opening half an hour.

Millwall have struggled away from home in league play, without a victory in nine consecutive Championship encounters, their longest winless record since November 2019, (12 in a row).

The road has not been kind to the Lions of late, though they seem to enjoy playing matches early in the week, losing only three of their last 20 league fixtures, which took place on a Tuesday.

While Millwall failed to score two times in consecutive league games last season, they have only gone goalless in three straight Championship matches once since 2019-20 and have never been shutout at Turf Moor in this competition.

Over the past three domestic campaigns, the Lions have only lost three successive league fixtures once, losing by a single goal to Bristol City (3-2), Nottingham Forrest (1-0) and Blackpool (1-0) in 2021-22.

Team News

Josh Brownhill celebrates scoring for Burnley on August 27, 2022© Reuters

Josh Brownhill is off to a splendid start in the Championship this season as the Burnley midfielder had a brace along with an assist on Saturday, putting him at four goals on the season, two more than he had in the 2021-22 Premier League campaign.

Jay Rodriguez put home his second of the season last weekend, Nathan Tella picked up goal number three and Samuel Bastien scored his first of the campaign, while he, Vitinho and Jack Cork all had an assist.

Ashley Westwood missed their last encounter because of a broken ankle, while Scott Twine and Kevin Long sat out of another match after they each previously took a knock.

Charlie Cresswell leads Millwall with a pair of goals domestically in 2022-23, with the other tallies coming courtesy of George Honeyman, George Saville and Jake Cooper.

They got a lot of help from Swansea earlier this season when Ben Cabango and Nathan Wood scored injury-time own goals to help the visitors earn a single point.

Honeyman and Benik Afobe each have one assist domestically this season, while Scott Malone leads the way for them with two.

Rowett made three changes to his lineup versus Reading with Jake Cooper, Jamie Shackleton and Tom Bradshaw replacing the injured Ryan Leonard, with Billy Mitchell and Tyler Burey beginning on the bench, while Mason Bennett is not expected to recover from his hamstring injury until the middle of September.

Burnley possible starting lineup:
Peacock-Farrell; Egan-Riley, Taylor, Harwood-Bellis, Roberts; Brownhill, Cork, Cullen; Tella, Rodriguez, Barnes

Millwall possible starting lineup:
Bialkowski; Hutchinson, Cresswell, Wallace; McNamara, Saville, Evans, Malone; Honeyman; Flemming, Afobe

We say: Burnley 2-0 Millwall

Milwall have looked timid and afraid when playing on the road, failing to score in seven league fixtures away from home last season, and without a goal in three matches this month in all competitions as the visitors.

The Clarets have had plenty of success versus Millwall over the past decade and have started burying more and more of their chances with eight goals in their past two domestic encounters.
