Bologna have edged away from the relegation zone in Serie A after a 1-0 win at home to fellow strugglers Novara.

The hosts could have taken the lead in the 18th minute, but Marco Di Vaio missed his spot kick following Santiago Garcia's foul.

The only goal of the game came seven minutes from time as Robert Acquafresca struck to send the home fans delirious.

The victory has pulled Stefano Pioli's side six points away from the drop zone, while Novara remain 19th in the table.
